This morning, I had the privilege of delivering a 90-minute presentation to the NHS Retirement Fellowship at All Saints Church in Vicarage Fields in Warwick where about 30 attentive members joined us. Despite being a mature audience, the subjects we discussed remain highly relevant, particularly considering the vulnerabilities that some seniors may face in today’s society.

Older adults can be perceived as easier targets for robbery and assault, making it even more crucial to equip them with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves. During the session, we explored several key areas, including:

  • The Legal Standpoint for Self-Defence: Understanding your rights and responsibilities when defending yourself is vital.

  • How Not to Be a Victim: Simple strategies to reduce vulnerability and avoid becoming a target.

  • De-escalation Skills and Conflict Management: Techniques to diffuse tense situations before they escalate.

  • Situational and Environmental Awareness: The importance of being aware of your surroundings to help you identify potential threats early.

  • Profiling and Dealing with Aggression: Recognising the signs of aggressive behaviour and how to manage it effectively.

The engagement from the audience was fantastic, sparking some very interesting discussions about their concerns for their own safety and that of their families. With rising crime rates in the Warwick and Leamington area, these conversations are more pertinent than ever.

I would like to extend my thanks to Ann Morris and the rest of the committee for inviting me to speak on such an important topic. It was a fulfilling experience, and I hope to continue empowering our community with the skills and knowledge necessary for personal safety.
