New Year, New Commitment - Take up an activity you'll stick at and enjoy!

As we welcome the new year, many of us reflect on our goals and aspirations for the coming months and year. New Year’s resolutions are a powerful way to set intentions for positive change in our lives. I want to share an experience that deeply resonates with this idea, a metaphor for TKD training, my morning ritual of plunging into a barrel of cold water.

Each morning, I immerse myself in water that has been zero degrees centigrade for the last 4 days immersing myself for a solid four minutes. Honestly, it’s a challenge. The moment I step in, I feel the shock of the cold, it takes your breath away, it's like glass all over the body! Yet, with every time I commit to this practice, I remind myself that this is who I am. I have made a decision that there is no option to opt out; I will embrace the challenge because the benefits far outweigh the discomfort.

This process isn’t just a test of endurance; it creates significant physiological and psychological changes. The rush of cold water heightens my alertness, improves circulation, and invigorates my mental state, leaving me feeling empowered and ready for whatever the day holds as well as making important physiological changes. This is very much akin to what we experience in our Taekwon-Do classes. Each session pushes us out of our comfort zones, enhancing our physical abilities and promoting mental growth through discipline.

Setting a goal, whether in the freezing water or in the dojang, provides an unrivalled opportunity for personal development. Like the Rollnick and Miller psychology of behaviour change model suggests, successful transformation encompasses three core components: importance, confidence, and readiness to change. We must first recognise the importance of our goals, believe in our ability to achieve them, and prepare ourselves mentally and physically for the path ahead. If the goal is important enough, if we have enough confidence we can do it through support and planning then we are ready to make that commitment to change and improvement.

Celebrating Our Students of the Year 2025

Another year over at Warwick & Leamington TKD and time to choose the students of the year. We are thrilled to announce and congratulate the recipients of this year's awards:

Warwick TKD:

  • Adult - Tansy Moore

  • Junior - Tilly Whitehorn

  • Junior runner up - Sophie Nelson

  • Pee Wee - Sophie Graham

Leamington TKD:

  • Isla Wong

The selection process for these awards was not an easy task. We had numerous deserving contenders, all embodying the spirit of Taekwon-Do and demonstrating dedication to their training, which is why we decided to also award a runner up prize in the junior category this year. Our award winners stood out for several reasons beyond just technical ability.

Why should women priorities learning self-defence?! (next course: 7th Dec)

In today’s society, personal safety is more important than ever. Recent tragic events, such as the Sarah Everard case, the Huntingdon train robbery, and the Bull Ring stabbing, highlight the urgent need for women to empower themselves through self-defence training.  We are offering a Women’s Only Self-Defence Course designed to equip women with essential skills for self-protection and confidence.

Why Self-Defence Matters

Every day, women face situations that require awareness, confidence, and readiness to act. Many people may respond to high-profile incidents with immediate inquiries about self-defence courses, but unfortunately, this interest often doesn’t translate into actual participation. This lack of prioritisation is concerning. Self-defence is not just a skill, it's a vital life skill that can help you navigate an uncertain world.

Our upcoming course on 7th December delivers practical and effective training in a supportive environment. You’ll learn essential techniques tailored for real-world situations and instil a mindset that promotes awareness and safety.

Celebrating Our Success at the Taekwon-Do UK British Championships

What an incredible weekend we had at the Taekwon-Do UK British Championships in Coventry. I am thrilled to share that our club achieved remarkable success, finishing as the second overall club in the entire competition. This is a tremendous accomplishment that reflects the hard work and dedication of our members.

We brought home an impressive 15 gold, 24 silver, and 7 bronze medals. Each medal represents not just talent, but countless hours of training, perseverance, and commitment to excellence. A special shoutout goes to Serena Todd, who ranked in the top 10 individuals and secured 2 gold medals, an outstanding achievement.

Last Session before Easter Break

Our classes are a combination of traditional Martial arts and effective reality based self-defence (Combatives).

A great last class before the break where we concentrated on combatives techniques from a personal and intimate distance and effective striking skills as well as side kicks to collapse the hip to gain an advantage over our opponent.

The Effectiveness of ITF Taekwon Do as a Self-Defence System

The use of martial arts as a means of physical fitness is popular but more importantly as an effective form of self-defence. Among the myriad styles available, International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) Taekwon Do stands out for its comprehensive approach to self-defence, rooted in its historical significance and practical applications. This blog explores the effectiveness of ITF Taekwon Do, particularly highlighting its use during the Korean War, its adoption by specialist police squads in South Korea, and the personal growth benefits it offers to practitioners.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as a Self-Defence system v's ITF Taekwon-Do

I see many posts on social media in my area asking where to go for self-defence training. From this you get a lot of people giving their opinion and what is often suggested is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) . However I feel that this advice respectfully is coming from people with little or no expertise or experience of physical altercations and violence!!

BJJ and Judo are both highly respected combative sports that emphasise grappling and ground techniques. While they are excellent for sport, competition and fitness, there are several reasons why they are not effective systems for self-defence in real-world scenarios.
